Within Alberta (with some exceptions) the Fire Code governs the requirements on tanks storing flammable goods. These tanks must be regulated and approved by the ASCA approved member in order to comply with law. Vehicle and heavy equipment service shops and processing plants often have used lubricating oil as a by-product of their business. Environmental impairment and the risk of fire have heightened the awareness of used oil storage in recent years.
The Alberta Fire Code sets the standards for installation, operation and removal of storage tanks and related piping. The Fire Code mandates that used oil be stored in conformance with the requirements for combustible liquids. Storage tanks for used oil can be located underground, aboveground or inside buildings.
Every storage tank installations requires approval from the governing authority. You must submit a permit application and an electronic copy of engineered drawings stamped by a professional engineered that is licensed to practice in Alberta.

In Alberta, underground storage tanks must be double-walled and meet a ULC Standard. Underground piping also requires a double-wall. There are various requirements that address the suction system and fittings necessary on an underground system. The Fire Code changes frequently and can be tough to stay on top of.

With below ground storage systems causing environmental risks. Aboveground used oil storage tanks are a very popular choice. Aboveground tanks require secondary containment and the Fire Code mandates the distance the tank can be from a structure depending on the tanks size.
For example, a small tank less than 5,000 liters capacity must be 0.5 meters away from a nearby structure. Overfill protection systems are often required depending on how the used oil enters the tank.
